I was in Thailand last year and the receptionist at our hotel couldn't really speak any English. He had just learned some standard "hotel" sentences and tried these out if you asked him a question - with hilarious results... When we told him we were bored and wanted to do something exciting, his answer was ''you can stay in your room till 3 o' clock"! |

I was on a business trip in Japan and on my off day, I took a trip into the Japanese countryside. During the daylight nothing seems impossible and I had a great day exploring off the beaten track. On the way back I suddenly realised what trouble I was in – it was late at night and I stood on the platform of an out-of-the-way station and couldn’t find the train to Narita as everything was signposted in Japanese. Everybody I asked just smiled and nodded, but they didn’t understand me and I didn’t understand them! Eventually, after what felt like many hair-raising hours and a few false starts I did make it back though! |
